  • Year 8 watch A Monster Calls

    Published 06/06/24

On Friday, 24 May, the English Team rewarded a group of Year 8 students for their effort and engagement with a trip to the theatre at The University of West London, Ealing. We watched a play version of Patrick Ness’s award-winning novel ‘A Monster Calls’. Below are some student reviews of the production.

The trip to the production 'A Monster Calls' was an incredibly useful opportunity for all the Year 8s that went. My favourite part was the lighting on the set, as it created a sense of mystery and set a serious tone. Overall, it was a fantastic experience.” Snehdeep Dhailwal [8G]

The trip was super enjoyable. We took the tube to the University of West London where we watched a play called ‘A Monster Calls’. The play was fantastic, there were a lot of themes and it was so interesting. It gave me a different perspective on how to view things and taught me a lot. Overall, the trip was an amazing experience and I am so thankful to be able to go on it!Lana-Maria Januda [8O]

Personally, I loved the play. It had amazing sound effects, lighting and used creative ideas to bring the whole play together. But best of all was the acting. I really felt like I was in the play and not once did the actors break character. The actors themselves took the time at the end to talk to us, which was a real privilege. I’d like to thank the actors and the school for giving me this beautiful opportunity. Overall, it was very professional, and I would love to go back to see another play.Izabella Drescher [8B]

  • Heston's Mock London Mayoral Elections

    Published 23/05/24

At Heston Community School, we are committed to fostering an environment where students can develop critical thinking skills and engage with real-world issues. Recently, our Year 10 and Year 12 students participated in a mock local election, an event designed to simulate the democratic process and encourage informed decision-making.

The mock elections were a hands-on opportunity for students to delve into the complexities of local governance and electoral processes. By limiting their choices to four candidates representing the four main political parties, we were able to provide a focused framework for students to analyse and compare different political ideologies and policies.

Prior to the election day, students were given time to study the manifestos of the four Sixth Form students who stood as candidates for the Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrats, and Green parties. Each manifesto outlined key policies on issues such as education, healthcare, the environment, and economic development. Classroom discussions and debates were held, enabling students to ask questions, voice their opinions, and critically evaluate the feasibility and impact of each candidate's proposals. Candidates also delivered campaign speeches in assemblies to promote their parties.

On the day of the mock elections, our Sixth Form Centre was transformed into a polling station. Students experienced the complete electoral process, from registering to vote, to casting their ballots in privacy. This practical exercise not only familiarised them with the logistics of voting but also emphasised the importance of participating in democratic processes.

The mock local elections at Heston Community School were more than just a learning exercise; they were an empowering experience that highlighted the importance of informed and active citizenship. By engaging with the manifestos and participating in the voting process, our students gained valuable insights into the responsibilities of voters and the impact of their choices on the community.

We believe that such initiatives are crucial in preparing our students to be thoughtful, informed, and engaged citizens. The success of this event has inspired us to continue incorporating similar experiential learning opportunities into our curriculum, ensuring that our students are well-equipped to navigate and contribute to the democratic society.

At Heston Community School, we are proud to provide our students with the skills and knowledge they need to make a positive impact on the world. We look forward to seeing how these future voters will shape the community and beyond.

  • Year 7 Road Safety Play!

    Published 03/05/24

Year 7 recently took part in an interactive road safety play presented by The Riot Act!  This dynamic theatre company brought learning to life, a performance filled with humour, relatable characters, and audience participation.

Year 7 were not just watching; they were part of the action!  The play tackled real-life scenarios, from phone distractions while walking to navigating crossings with friends.

"It felt way cooler than a regular lesson," shared a thrilled Year 7 student. "Now I know for sure to always look both ways and ditch the phone near traffic!"

The Riot Act's engaging performance left a lasting impression. Year 7 left the performance buzzing with newfound road safety knowledge and a commitment to becoming responsible pedestrians.  These lessons will undoubtedly stick with them on their journeys to and from school, keeping them safe on the streets.

    Mrs Ryan [Learning Coordinator]

    Road Safety Story Write-up

On Wednesday, Year 7’s watched a play about road safety. It was performed by The Riot Act. The characters Jo, Tom, and Fran told a story about what could happen if you are distracted by your phone while walking on the roads. Jo was overprotective of her brother Tom, who was funny but a bit thoughtless. Jo had a hard time standing up to Fran, who was extremely reckless when he was out and about and a bad influence on the two. In the performance, there were many major points about what you could be distracted by – phones, music, and even friends because of peer pressure. After the performance ended, the actors from The Riot Act talked to us about brain development relevant to our ages and decision making. I personally enjoyed the play, and I am sure that my peers and everybody else did too.

  • ‘An Inspector Calls’ at Heston Community School

    Published 08/04/24

‘Drama In Impact’ visited the School for their annual performance of ‘An Inspector Calls’.

Year 11 students relished the opportunity to see Priestley’s thought-provoking play brought to life ahead of their GCSE English Literature examinations. They also took on the roles of the characters themselves in a workshop, performing with great insight and confidence.

'An Inspector Calls' came to school. The play itself was shortened and concentrated to one hour, showing the key events and the overall build-up of the play. After the re-enactment, a workshop took place, where we could ask questions to the characters and some students went up on stage to act out the opening scene. In the end, this experience helped me to understand the play better. When the questions were asked, I got an in-depth understanding of why the characters did something in a particular manner. As a result of this workshop, I can now further develop my essays for my exams as it deepened my knowledge and I am aiming for a grade 9.” Mancy Dutt [11P]

“Watching ‘An Inspector Calls’ gave me the opportunity to visually remember the key events of the play and helped me recall it well.”

    Nafisa Ahmed [11O]

“I really enjoyed the play 'An Inspector Calls' and the workshop because I found it very engaging and fun. I found the Q and A session after the performance very useful, especially since the actors answered the questions whilst in character, thus increasing my knowledge of each character in the play and their thought process, which will be useful for my exams. Additionally, I really enjoyed when people from the audience were called up to perform on the stage, such as my friend Ali, who took on the role of Edna. This made the whole event even more entertaining as it was interactive.”
